First Seminole War
The First Seminole War broke out in 1817 and only lasted until 1818. The major cause of the war was from the Seminoles harboring African Americans slaves that had ran away from their masters. The U.S authorities felt the need to recapture the slaves living among the Seminole people, they did this by sending Andrew Jackson and an Army of 3000 men to burn villages. Andrew Jackson and his Army were not sent just to destroy the Seminoles villages but to attack two Spanish Forts. The two forts were located in Saint Marks and Pensacola. General Andrew Jackson attacked and successfully captured both forts. As a result the Spanish made the decision that they could no longer keep control of Florida. So the Adam-Onis treaty was made, it gave the U.S ownership of Florida and pardoned Spain from $5,000,000 of debt.
This effected the Seminole Tribe directly because Spain was acting as a buffer from the U.S, but now the U.S would be sitting right at the Seminoles back door. During the time of the war Osceola (known as Little Owl at the time) was only 14 and had not trained to become a warrior, so yet again him and his mother were scrambling to avoid the havoc brought by Andrew Jackson and his Army.
They both end up with another Seminole Tribe in the Tampa Bay area and Little Owl began to hone his hunting, athletic, and warrior skills. He trained for several years and when he was 18 (around 1822) Little Owl performed the ritual to become a man. After the ritual he received his new name Osceola which meant "black drink singer" because of the loud ritual cry he performed while drinking the black liquid for the ritual. Now that he was a man Osceola was ready to fight and participate in the affairs of his clan.
